TOP 10 BRISBANE CHEAP EATS

By Daniela Sunde-Brown

Ben’s Burgers

5B Winn Lane, Fortitude Valley 07 3195 3094 • bensburgers.com.au

The best NBA games of the ’90s screen against a backdrop of the decade’s best hip hop. Don’t dare ask for alterations to one of three burgers or the monthly special. Beer is great but the house-made ginger ale is straight-up excellent, especially when spiked.

Bird’s Nest Yakitori Bar

Shop 5, 220 Melbourne Street, South Brisbane and 702 Ann Street, Fortitude Valley 07 3844 4306 • birdsnestrestaurant.com.au

Hungry salarymen perched solo at the counter wash down a barrage of chicken skewers with Asahi schooners. Hearts, thigh, liver, skin – all charred over Japanese charcoal. Few spots provide a better dining experience for one, and on Monday all sticks are $3 each.

Cheeky Poke Bar

63 Skyring Terrace, Newstead 07 3625 0467 • cheekypokebar.com.au

It’s hard to tell if these heavily sauced raw fish Hawaiian rice bowls have all the health benefits touted on Instagram, but we’re not worried. A full bar list and fried-wonton tacos show this slick poke palace is not just for Newstead’s lycra-wearing health nuts.

Greenglass

336 George Street, Brisbane City 0403 966 671 • greenglasswine.com

Top steak frites and excellent boutique Aussie vino are the only guarantees at Greenglass. A daily changing menu of four or five French-inspired dishes should give you change for a lobster at lunch. Arrive early, visit often.

Happy Boy

East Street, Fortitude Valley 0413 246 890 • happyboy.com.au

Big spicy flavours, a buzzing dining room and unusual wines – there’s a lot to like at this truly excellent Chinese restaurant’s newer, bigger location. Hot and sour Sichuan broth with fillets of tender white fish deserves applause, as does the duck fried rice.

Izakaya Kotobuki

93 Albert Street, Brisbane • 07 3061 2152 sushikotobuki.com.au

Fresh sushi or cheap sushi – you don’t have to pick here. Kotobuki’s extensive list of made-to-order rolls, bentos and Japanese fare will leave you will change for a draught pour or three of Asahi. By night the yakitori grill flicks into action, too.

Ol’ School

58 Hope Street, South Brisbane 0402 360 432 • olschool.co

A wave of hungry hands dives into the scoop of crunchy hand-cut fries dumped on brown paper at the table centre. Ol’ School has refreshed the classic fish ‘n’ chips shop with daily fish specials, house-made sauces and proper hospitality. Don’t skip the fish dim sim.

Pho Queue

9 Cracknell Road, Annerley • 07 3195 6915 phoqueue.com.au

Keep it classic with tripe, tendon and meatballs in a huge bowl of southern-style broth, or treat yourself to a Darling Downs wagyu eye fillet pho. This BYO specialty Vietnamese soup and dessert kitchen is from the same stock as Cafe O Mai, with a massively expanded selection.

Taro’s Ramen

Level 2, 480 Queen Street, Brisbane City 07 3839 4840 • taros.com.au

The rich Bangalow sweet pork tonkotsu broth for the ramen takes two days to cook. The noodles are handmade using locally milled unbleached flour. Free-range eggs come from the Darling Downs. Producing the perfect bowl of ramen is an obsession for owner Taro Akimoto, whose four Brisbane stores serve some of Australia’s best ramen.
